The State Library of Kansas is committed to safeguarding information collected through its online services and websites. This privacy policy is intended to disclose to you our privacy practices in a manner that is easy to understand. If there is something you do not understand about our privacy practices, please feel free to contact our communications coordinator.

This privacy policy does not apply to products or services provided, or information obtained, other than through our website and associated links. Apps, databases and other third-party vendors have their own privacy practices. Please keep in mind that some parts of this policy may change as needed or required by law, and that not all parts will apply to all pages or parts of this website.

What information do we collect from you?

Very little of the information we collect is personal to you. Registration requires basic identifying information, which may include name, date of birth, address, and email.

When you report a problem with our website or services, we may collect contact information along with a description of your problem.

Direct Collection

We collect much of the information listed above directly from you when you submit it on our sites. This includes information such as registration information, contact information, user submissions, and public postings. We do track website analytics. Web analytics track Internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, Internet service provider (ISP), referring/exit pages, platform type, date/time stamp, and the number of clicks. We utilize this information to analyze trends, administer our website, track website navigation in the aggregate, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use.

Indirect Collection – Social Networking

Our website may link or direct you to use third-party social networking platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram for information or additional participation. This may include the use of social media plugins such as Facebook “like”, Tweet, Instagram “like” buttons, etc. When you use these social networking platforms and plugins, your username and password for the available information about you or collected from you on these services may be shared with us. When you use social networking platforms and plugins, you share your information with them and their privacy policy applies disclosure of such information. In addition, they may be able to collect information about you, including your activity, or may notify your connections on the social networking platform about your use of our website or social media platforms. Such services may allow your activity to be monitored across multiple sites for the purpose of delivering more targeted advertising. Please note that the privacy policies of the social network platform providers will apply in those situations and we encourage you to read them. We may add new social networking plugins and buttons to our sites from time to time.

Use of Live Chat

The State Library of Kansas includes a live chat feature so that Kansans can reach out to Librarians for assistance. When a staff member is not available to respond to your chat, your information may be shared via email within the agency.

You may be asked to provide information such as your first and last name, date of birth, or email address so that staff can assist with answering your requests. We will never ask for, nor should you ever provide, specific personal such as your full Social Security number or any kind of payment information. Chat message histories will be stored and secured consistent with industry standard practices.

How do we use your information?

Our main goal in collecting information is to improve the Sites and provide you with the best possible experience on the Sites.

We may also use your personal information to:

• Enable you to participate in online services.

• Make our products, services and sites better.

• Compile, analyze and do research on our user demographics and behavior.

• We use location data only to provide and improve our service.

Who is collecting information?

Only the State Library of Kansas and its service providers and contractors will have access to your personal account information. When you are on our sites and are asked for personal information, you are sharing that information with the Library and our service providers and contractors. We recognize the particular importance of protecting privacy where children are involved. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information online from children under the age of 13. If a child under the age of 13 has provided us with personally identifiable information online, we ask that a parent or guardian contact us at kslc@ks.gov.
