Talking Books

Kansas Talking Books is a free and personalized service in support of eligible Kansans to ensure that all may read. | State Library of Kansas

Eligibility

Any resident of Kansas who has difficulty reading or handling traditional print materials as a result of a permanent or temporary visual impairment, physical impairment or reading disability. Some facilities and organizations, such as schools and nursing homes, qualify for services as an institution.

Definitions for application purposes:

Blindness: Describes circumstances among people whose visual acuity is 20/200 or less in the better eye, with correcting lenses, or whose diameter of visual field subtends an angular distance no greater than 20 degrees.

Visual Impairment: Describes a visual disability, with correction and regardless of optical measurement, is preventing the reading of standard printed material.

Physical Impairment: If a person is unable to hold or manipulate a book, or to focus or move the eyes to the extent normally acceptable for reading, they have a physical impairment.

Reading Disability: Describes a perceptual or reading disability of sufficient severity to substantially prevent a person reading print material to the same degree as a person without an impairment
