Kansas Talking Books has been running our summer reading program each summer for more than 15 years! It’s a program dedicated to keeping patrons interested in reading during the months when people are more active in other activities. The program runs throughout the summer, usually around first of June to the first of August, which doesn’t interfere with the school year for our youth patrons. This year, the program begins Monday, June 3rd and ends Friday, August 2nd. 

We encourage all of patrons to register for the summer reading program. There are prizes, reading recommendations, activities, and virtual events and games. The theme this year is Adventure begins at Your Library / La Aventura Comienza en tu Biblioteca. 

Each year, there is a theme we use a guide when planning summer reading. It is something different each year. The themes come from the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) which is one the national organizations for librarians focused on supporting literacy and reading during the summer months.

Using that theme, our library staff develops weekly themes that tie to the main theme. We use those to create themed book recommendation lists each week with books for all ages included. We’ve finished finalizing the weekly themes for this summer, each one different kinds of adventures:

  • Week 1: Quests for fortune
  • Week 2: Beyond this realm
  • Week 3: Into the wild alone
  • Week 4: Beastly journeys
  • Week 5: Out of time
  • Week 6: Around the world
  • Week 7: Blowing your mind
  • Week 8: Flavorful expeditions
  • Week 9: Bring along a friend (or two)

In addition to weekly themed book recommendation lists, we provide weekly activities. These are activities you can do at home, by yourself or with family and friends. We’ve tried to adapt the activities to make them as accessible as possible. There may be no extra materials required or, if there are materials required, they can usually be found for low-cost or even on hand at home.

Two big changes to the program have occurred in the last 6 years. First, in 2018, we added a phone-in book club, which has since become our KTB Quarterly Book Club. We had our first discussion that June with the book we read tying into the summer reading theme. (That first book was DB 74698 The Wrecking Crew: the inside story of rock and roll’s best-kept secret by Kent Hartman). It’s become a traditional part of summer reading, although it now is held using Zoom which doesn’t require patrons to have a computer and internet access. All patrons need to access the discussion is a phone. Our readers advisors are available to help patrons access the discussion by phone. The book for this June is DB 114761 Warrior girl uearthed by Angeline Boulley. Annotation: "With the rising number of missing Indigenous women, her family's involvement in a murder investigation, and grave robbers profiting off her Anishinaabe tribe, Perry takes matters into her own hands to solve the mystery and reclaim her people's inheritance." -- Provided by publisher. -- Unrated. Commercial audiobook. For senior high and older readers.

Second, the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled started their summer reading program last year, 2023. They also use CSLP for their summer reading. It is not a separate program but rather a set of virtual events and activities talking book libraries across the nation can adapt for their own summer reading programs. They’re continuing again this year with the following virtual events that all Kansas Talking Books patrons can attend:

      • With NYT bestselling author Angeline Boulley with moderator Andrea L. Rogers (for young adult and adult patrons)
      • Angeline Boulley, an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, is a storyteller who writes about her Ojibwe community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. She is a former Director of the Office of Indian Education at the U.S. Department of Education. Angeline lives in southwest Michigan, but her home will always be on Sugar Island. Firekeeper’s Daughter is her debut novel, and was an instant #1 NYT Bestseller. The book has been named the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature, the Printz Award, the William C.       • Find something new to read with this “choose your adventure” style game. There will be one for kids and young adults and one for adults.
    2. The Whispering Library Escape Room
      • A virtual escape room with text-based clues. It is great for the whole family to play together.

With all the recommendation lists, activities, and virtual events, the topping on the cake is that registrants for the summer reading program are automatically entered for a weekly prize drawing for a $10 gift card to Walmart. We send out reading logs for participants to keep track of what they’ve read during the program. If you return your reading log and met the minimum reading requirements your age group, you will be entered in a drawing to win the grand prize, a $50 gift card to Walmart. There is one grand prize per age group. The minimum requirements for the reading logs are:

  • Adults: read at least 5 books
  • Youth: read at least 60 minutes per week

¡Los Libros Parlantes de Kansas hemos encabezado nuestro programa de lectura cada verano por más de 15 años! Es un programa dedicado a mantener a nuestros usuarios interesados en la lectura durante los meses cuando la gente es más activa en otras actividades. El programa toma lugar durante el verano, típicamente del primero de junio al primero de agosto, de esta manera no interfiere con el año escolar de nuestros usuarios juveniles. Este año el programa comienza el lunes, 3 de junio, y termina el viernes, 2º de agosto. 

Animamos a todos nuestros usuarios a registrarse al programa de lectura de verano. Hay premios, recomendaciones de lectura, actividades, eventos virtuales, y juegos. El tema de este año es Adventure begins at Your Library/ La Aventura Comienza en tu Biblioteca. 

Cada año usamos un tema como guía al planear la lectura de verano. El tema es diferente cada año. Los temas llegan del Programa Bibliotecario de Verano Colaborativo (CSLP), una organización nacional para biliotecarios enfocados en apoyar el alfabetismo y la lectura durante los meses de verano.

Usando ese tema, nuestro personal bibliotecario desarrolla temas semanales que se relacionan al tema principal. Los usamos para crear listas de recomendaciones de libros temáticos cada semana incluyendo libros para todas las edades. Hemos finalizado nuestros temas semanales pare el verano, cada uno con diferentes tipos de aventuras: 

  • 1ª. Semana: Búsqueda de fortuna
  • 2ª semana: Mas allá de esta esfera.
  • 3ª semana: Solos en la naturaleza
  • 4ª semana: Jornadas bestiales
  • 5ª semana: Fuera del tiempo
  • 6ª semana: Alrededor del mundo
  • 7ª semana: Volando tu mente
  • 8ª semana: Expediciones sabrosas
  • 9ª semana: Traite un amigo (o dos)

Junto con las listas de recomendaciones de libros temáticos también proporcionamos actividades semanales. Estas actividades se pueden hacer desde tu casa, individualmente o con familiares y amigos. Hemos tratado de adaptar las actividades para hacerlas lo más accesible posible. Puede que no se requieran materiales adicionales, pero si se requieren, típicamente se pueden encontrar por un bajo precio o ser artículos fácilmente encontrados en tu casa.

Dos grandes cambios al programa han ocurrido en los últimos 6 meces. Primero, en 2018, añadimos el club telefónico de lectores, el cual se ha convertido en nuestro club de lectores trimestral de los Libros Parlantes De Kansas. Tuvimos nuestra primera discusión ese junio con el libro relacionado con el tema de lectura de verano de ese año. (Ese libro fue DB 74698, The Wrecking Crew: the inside story of rock and roll’s best-kept secret por Kent Hartman). Esta actividad se ha convertido en parte tradicional del programa de lectura de verano, aunque ahora se lleva a cabo mediante Zoom ya que no requiere que los usuarios tengan computadora y acceso al internet. Lo único que necesitas como usuario para participar es una línea telefónica. Nuestros asesores de lectura están disponibles para ayudar a nuestros usuarios con acceso a las discusiones por teléfono. Con todas las listas de recomendaciones, actividades y eventos virtuales tiramos la casa por la ventana al registrar automáticamente a todos los participantes del programa de lectura de verano para la oportunidad de ganar el premio semanal de una tarjeta de regalo para Walmart de $10. Nosotros te mandaremos un registro de lectura y para participar anota cada libro que has leído durante el programa. Si regresas tu registro y lograste leer la mínima cantidad requerida para tu grupo de edad, te registraremos en el sorteo para ganar el premio mayor: una tarjeta de regalo de $50 para Walmart. Los requisitos mínimos para los registros de lectura son los siguientes: 

  • Adultos: Leer mínimo de 5 libros
  • Jóvenes: leer mínimo de 60 minutos por semana
